FAQs

How much does the CarCamp kit cost?

Our “Base Camp” kit, that turns many vehicles into a camping bed-on-wheels, is $1,680 – less than the cost of 10 nights in an average hotel room.

What vehicles are compatible with the "Base Camp" kit?

Our "Base Camp" kit is designed to fit many SUV/crossover style vehicles. As long as your vehicle is at least 39.5" wide between the narrowest part of the wheel wells, is at least 30.5" from the back of the seats (in the upright position) to the trunk (when closed) and the distance from the trunk (when closed) to the top of the back seats (when folded) is at least 53.75" in length, AND your cargo space is not recessed below the lip of your trunk more than 1.5", the kit will work for you. See the diagram below for more details on how to measure or click here to view or watch a step-by-step video and follow along for help measuring your vehicle.

How can I be sure the kit works in my car?

There are kits listed for sale for some of the most popular and compatible vehicles. If you have a vehicle other than what is listed, here is a diagram of the interior of a crossover vehicle with the measurements of the kit applied. The measurements of your vehicle need to be greater than the measurements shown for each area.

In order for your backseats to be able to return to the upright position with your kit in the cargo space, you will also need to measure the distance from the back of your back seats (in the upright position) to the interior of the trunk (when the trunk is closed). This ensures that the kit has ample room to fold up without damage.

You can also view a list of vehicles we have already measured. Because trim levels can affect that interior sizes and spacing, please measure your vehicle using the diagram to confirm that your individual vehicle is compatible. Here is a step-by-step video for help in confirming vehicle compatibility.

What size is the kit?

When folded, the kit measures 39"x31.5"x10.5". When unfolded, the platform of the kit is 39"x70"x9".

What size mattress works with the kit?

The kit is the exact size of a twin mattress when in the extended position. It can also hold a modified full-size mattress. A “modified full-size” is the full-size mattress trimmed down to fit your specific vehicle. Nearly every make of vehicle varies at least a bit in the interior width. If you’d like a wider mattress, just order the full-size, tri-fold mattress, remove the cover and trim it to the width you’d like. (This is what I’ve done for my personal kit.) The mattress will hang over the edges of the kit a bit, but this is where I store water jugs, my solo stove and other bulky items.

Where to purchase a mattress?

The kit does not come with the mattress. We can purchase the mattress and ship it to you, but the most cost-effective option for you is to order the mattress and ship it to yourself. We have recommended mattresses that can be found on Amazon, but the most important thing is that you go with a tri-fold mattress. One of the main features of the kit is that it all collapses into the cargo space of the vehicle. This feature is void if your mattress doesn’t also fold up.

Does the kit come apart?

The kit can come apart into four separate pieces (the drawers are removable if needed), to make solo-installation possible. I designed this kit with other women in mind and want to empower us all to do more solo activities.

What do I do with the kit at the end of a trip?

Because the kit is designed to close into a compact shape and fit in your cargo space, you don’t need to remove it at the end of every trip. Just slide the kit into the closed position, put your back seats upright, and you have a functioning commuter vehicle for the week. If you need more space in your cargo area, the mattress is a light-weight, easy-to-remove piece that gives space for boxes, groceries, luggage or more on top of the kit.

How much does the kit weigh?

In total, the kit is just under 70 pounds. It is modular to make solo installation possible. When separated the heaviest piece (the back frame with drawers removed) is under 30 pounds.

How can I be sure the CarCamp kit will fit my car?

Here is a diagram of the interior of a crossover vehicle with the measurements of the kit applied.
